THANK YOU 2012

Dear Family, Friends and Patrons,

Thank you for another very good year on this planet.  It always amazes me how resilient we can be during all the things that arise in one's life-time.
I am so grateful to all the artists, family and patrons who joined us for the last open studio of the year.  And, to all who wished they could stop by during this busy time but could not.  Your warmth and support is what keeps me going!

May we all find peace in our hearts and minds in the approaching NEW YEAR.

PORCELAIN

Translucent, strong, dense and vibrant are a few words I use to describe porcelain.

Working with porcelain clay is yummy.  The clay slips through the fingertips on its way to becoming a form.  After firing the clay is so strong and dense and the glazes are so vibrant on the surface.  I still fire to a hot cone 10 because I love the sound of the clay body at this temperature.  I love how the high pitch ring vibrates and carries in the air.  I recently started throwing and building with Jack Troy Porcelain from Standard Ceramics.  The cone 10 porcelain I was using was warping at cone 10 so I switched to a cone 13 clay body which I am firing to cone 10.

I am not sure why the old clay started warping so much.  Maybe I am handling the clay differently or my throwing has become much thinner.  Or, maybe the clay recipe was changed.    Regardless of the reason, I am getting use to a new clay body and wondering how it will change my work.

Bearing ones SOUL

Continually hoping for PEACE!

Occasionally, I really need to bear my soul and not just talk about clay!

This time of year is always difficult.  With daybreak at 7:00 or so and dusk at 5:00 or so this time of year, people start losing their grounding.  Especially if you work a 9 to 5 job.  So, it is not surprising that great reflection might happen upon ones past life experiences.  There are so many stories in each and every ones of us that are fortunate enough to be birthed upon this earth.  That said I am in this life for the long haul.  You should be too.   Life is so precious that you need to get over whatever it is that is haunting you.  One story I seem to be sharing lately is a survival story which goes like this.  My dear brother in law Dan, who was a Marine in the Vietnam War, shared many horror stories with me that he experienced in the war.  He was in the Battle of Khe Sanh.  That said I choose to tell this story.  While fighting an unclear war for whatever reason, the thing that kept my Dear Brother in Law going was his experience with following the Buddhist Monks into the Jungle.  He would transform his consciousness to wonder and look and listen to the prayers, mantras and pujas offered to the directions of the worlds in hopes of better times.  One monk offered an amulet of protection and yes my Dear Brother in Law came home.  Not in tact as he suffered from severe PTSD.   His life energy so strong, that he recovered mostly from his own decisive ability to go forward.
My prayers for anyone this time of year is for healing, health and good fortune in your days ahead.

Offering much love and protection.

Up and Running again

Garden of Porcelain Flowers
15.5 x 15.5 x 1.5 depth
Installation
Seconds after getting the new computer up and running there were already updates coming in from cyberspace.  Who would have known how fast technology would speed up and how difficult it would become to hold onto the stillness within.  You know, the soul mind connection.  Soon enough I think maybe this speed will become our new Tower of Babel.
That said, as I could no longer Babel it was time to upgrade.  Zapplication would no longer take images and I had difficulty Blogging with Google because my hardware was no longer compatible.  This is not a good thing when you are trying to run a small successful business.  I hear in months that Windows 8 is coming out to get us ready for the touch screen world.   Yikes!
So, I just spent the last few weeks dealing with a bunch of crazy things.  Enough said!

Garden of Porcelain Pods
15.5 x 15.5 x 1.5 depth
Installation

The studio keeps calling to me and I try to get as much time in as possible. I have added to my repertoire of small sculptural objects, pods and flowers.

Computer Woes

I planned on taking some work time off from teaching art at my studio and at the retirement community so I could spend some concentrated time preparing for some upcoming shows in the studio.  Things do not always go as planned but I am grateful to be alive.  While driving home on the last day of work which started my vacation time I got in a car accident.  All I keep saying is I'm O.K.!  Maybe it just is one of those shock responses.
Then, there is the computer issues.  I have spent the last week deleting files and backing up files on my computer which I was sure was going to start spitting and sputtering smoke at any minute.  Finally the fan stopped working on the computer and the groaning and whining stopped.
This week is my last week of "vacation time".  Already I was up last night until midnight peeling and gutting roasted peppers from our garden and there are more.
Anyway, when I get my computer issues resolved I will be back posting images and blogging more often.  As it is now, my hardware is so old that I cannot navigate on line very easily these days.

WOULDN''T IT BE NICE - an artist dreaming - 1

A thought about patrons for the artist!
Artists can be an interesting lot!  They can often not be as concerned about money as others working as adjunct faculty for less pay and much fewer benefits than full time teaching faculty just to stay in their studio full time.  They can also rally for a cause that they are passionate about often paying lots of money for a booth fee at an art show in hopes of selling there art work to support themselves and the cause of the show.  Wouldn't it be nice if a few shows returned to supporting the artist?  Not the arts or the paycheck for someone else, but the artist themselves.  In another life I may have thought this to be a selfish idea.  But, as the many years have passed I think it a good idea for artists to examine what they are doing.

Where To Start?

The past few weeks have been full of adventure.  The 2012 Wooster Functional Ceramics Workshop, a visit to Canada, teaching, studio work, family and friends.  So many tears and laughter have been experienced over the past few weeks I don't know where to begin.  I could talk about the drama or talk about clay.  I choose clay!

The functional ceramics workshop was amazing.  I purchased one of Gail Kendalls lovely oval plates to add to my clay collection.  Watching Gail draw the sgraffito lines through the white slip and onto the red clay was like watching a dance of the line.  She works on such a wet surface it was like watching a painter create except there was no paint on the tool making the mark.  The process of taking away a surface to create a line rather than painting on a line has always fascinated me.

Small tray by Gail Kendall

The wealth of information that was exchanged was over the top.  I found myself asking so many questions and was so grateful for all the answers.  How nice it was to spend time with so many people who love working with clay.  Watching Jeff, Gail and Bill work was a real treat!  There are so many new things I want to try before the ideas drift out of the memory realm of concept and are forgotten.  Oh to have a million arms!

porcelain toilet
We live in an old farmhouse.  The century home sign reads built in 1891 by henry hill.  The old home needs a lot of work and the bathroom has always been a nightmare.  I try not to complain as I realize that half the world's population is without a toilet in their home.
O.K. so really, we had a carpenter ant infestation and had to tear the walls out of the bathroom.  Our bathroom is not usually an attached outhouse.  Luckily, my husband Bruce is really handy with building things or financially we would be in a financial mess.  I think I would have drilled a whole in the bathroom wall several years ago and planted an ant colony if I would have known a new bathroom would be the outcome.

ART AS A BUSINESS

I am not a trust fund baby and I paid for my college education.  Dad was a steal worker and Mom ran the household.  I am the only sibling in my family to go to college.  In other words, I did not have parents pay for my education, buy me a car or pay it forward to make a better life for their kids.  Simply, Dad and Mom just did not have the means to do this but I think my modest upbringing may have prepared me for survival in the Arts. Maybe it was a little crazy to study the Arts as surviving in the Arts is no easy task.  Thriving in the Arts is nearly impossible.  These two references are being made in relationship to the financial cost of living.  So, what does it mean to be successful in the Arts in relationship to where I live in the United States of America, Ohio?

I suppose everyone would have a different answer for this.  Some may say being published or landing that tenure teaching position means success.  Others may say being accepted into the Smithsonian show means success.  Recently , all I want is to develop a good relationship with a few gallery or boutique owners that will sell my work and send a timely check for the work they sell.

For the first time after 30 some years, I had a gallery call and reorder work after only 8 days.
Could this mean that the wind has finally shifted and is at my back spurring me on to reaching the goal of thriving in the Arts.

For now, I have decided to focus on one clay object, the heart.  The clay hearts are light, easy to pack and ship and the turn around time from making to shipping is faster than other clay work I make.  Thus, it is a financially sound plan and will be relatively easy for me to keep up with any gallery order.  All I need is 5 galleries to work with that can move a dozen hearts a week.  To sit in the studio, work with the clay and experiment with the glazes on the surface of the hearts; This can fulfill my artistic curiosity until of course it evolves into something else as nothing ever remains the same.

Thanks to Iva at American Crafts and Jewels in Carmel for opening your gallery.  I do hope the momentum continues.

Teapot

I have been immersing myself in studio work which leaves little time to do all those other things in life.  The bills are still getting paid on time, the house work needs some attention and our dog longs for more time outside.  It still is winter which is not my favorite season.  When the temperature is between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit I am comfortable.  So, I did not last very long yesterday while outside trying to take images of my work in 30 degree weather with the small dots of snow falling on the backdrop.  The day was cloudy and the sun was setting which is perfect for minimum glare and true color.

I lasted long enough to take a few images of new work.  The handle on this teapot is so comfortable and the weight balance for holding and pouring is amazing.

New Year 2012

Happy New Year to All!

I am finally recovering from the fast pace of the Holiday Season which is becoming a distant memory.  With Valentine's Day just around the corner I do not have much time to waste.  I am hoping to begin making new hearts for Valentine's Day today.  The new construction in the studio is complete and I am almost finished with reorganizing the studio.

When I started teaching privately, I turned over much of my work space to students.  A new 10x10 space has been built.  This is just enough space to organize the studio more efficiently.  I suppose if I did not make my own glazes I would not need so much space but, I just love experimenting with the materials.  Maybe I was a geologist in a previous life.

May the New Year be full of just what you need.  And, it looks like Chinese New Year is on January 23 and Losar on February 22nd so we still have a lot of time to begin a New Year.
